A Liverpool supporters' group claim to have been given the backing of the Premier League in their efforts in attempting to oust current owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks.

Spirit of Shankly, the Liverpool Supporters' Union, travelled to London yesterday to hold talks at the League's headquarters in Gloucester Place with chief executive Richard Scudamore in a bid to end the current financial turmoil at Anfield.

But despite giving the group their blessing, the Premier League insist that the debts placed on the club by the Americans is currently sustainable

Fans have been protesting against Gillett and Hicks for over two-and-a-half years following their loan agreement with the Royal Bank of Scotland, which saw the Reds plunged into a £350million debt.

Despite repayments by the duo to reduce that amount to £237million, the club's overall debts now stand at £351million, with interest payments totalling £110,000 per day.

James McKenna, a spokesman for Sprit of Shankly, said: “Richard Scudamore suggested we keep on campaigning. He understood the fans are unhappy and want some answers. That was a positive to come from the meeting.

"They were quite receptive to our concerns but it was clear that, as things stand, the Premier League’s powers are limited."

Also discussed in the meeting were the measures in place for the League's 'fit and proper' person test for new owners of football clubs, following financial troubles at other top flight outfits this season, most notably Manchester United and Portsmouth.

The Premier League have insisted that there is very little they can do at present to aid Liverpool's predicament but plan to unveil proposals to avoid a repeat of the plight suffered by clubs whose owners are not befitting of the 'fit and proper' tag.

“We want to make sure this situation wouldn’t happen again," insists McKenna.

“The Premier League have tried to give us assurances. But at the moment club chairmen have to agree to the changes the league would like to implement.

“It’s dependent on those who own football clubs to agree to the changes or not.

“Our plans now are to keep up the pressure on Hicks and Gillett to make sure we are listened to. We also want to make sure the Premier League take action to prevent this happening again.”
